Friday at PASS Europe 2006

The final day of the event was marked by more great sessions.  Thanks to all of the speakers and volunteers who worked so hard to make PASS Europe 2006 a success! BTW, if you were an attendee and you took some pictures, I'd love to see them.  Email them to me at [email protected] and I'll send a copy of "SQL in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition" to the one with the best photo (my own subjective opinion, of course!)

My personal agenda for the day was:

What's new in Transact-SQL, by Paul Nielsen
Understanding Maintenance and Monitoring Enhancements in SQL Server 2005, by Microsoft France's Patrick Guimonet  (more on that in a moment)
Fine Tuning Performance with Plan Guides, by Microsoft's Bart Duncan
Workload Management with Service Broker, DMVs, and CLR for DBAs, by Bill Wunder, MVP and independent consultant

Patrick's session had lots of good information.  I encourage you to look at these two documents that he highlighted:

Troubleshooting Performance Problems in SQL Server 2005, containing 103 pages of information about tuning with DMV's at

PSS Service Center Labs - 2005, self-paced labs designed by Microsoft PSS for the PASS 2005 Summit at

And now on a humours note, I'm not sure if this URL is still active, but Microsoft EMEA put together quite a funny and self-deprecating film at :

Great job, guys!  I love to see a sense of humor and personality shine through!
