This week, I discuss the sequence for upgrading servers when migrating from Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to Exchange Server 2003 and the process that DHCP servers follow when trying to authorize with Active Directory (AD). I also show you how to hide the drop-down list of domains that appears on the logon screen of Windows XP and later machines. Next, I tell you what the Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager for Windows XP is, and I end with a discussion of Group Policy Object (GPO) inheritance.

Q. When migrating from Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server to Exchange Server 2003, do you need to follow a certain sequence for upgrading or adding servers?

A. Some special rules exist when you upgrade a back-end/front-end Exchange setup. You can't have an Exchange 2003 back-end server with Exchange 2000 front-end servers in one administrative group. You must upgrade all front-end servers to Exchange 2003 before you upgrade back-end servers within an administrative group. After you upgrade the Exchange 2000 front-end servers to Exchange 2003 or replace them with new Exchange 2003 front-end servers, you'll be able to upgrade the back-end servers to Exchange 2003. Q. How often do DHCP servers authorize with Active Directory (AD)?

A. Before a Windows 2000 Server or later DHCP server that's either part of a domain or on a network that has an AD domain can start its DHCP service, the service must be authorized with AD. When the DHCP service starts, it queries AD to confirm its authorization status and continues to query AD every 60 minutes thereafter to confirm that it's still authorized. DHCP servers that are members of a workgroup send out DHCPINFORM messages asking other DHCP servers on the network to respond. If a DHCP server that's part of an AD domain responds, the DHCP service won't start. You can change the 60-minute authorization check by performing this registry change:

Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters registry subkey.
From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value.
Enter the name RogueAuthorizationRecheckInterval and press Enter.
Double-click the new value and set it to the number of minutes between authorization checks (e.g., 120 for 2 hours) and click OK.

To disable DHCP server authorization checks, perform these steps:

Start the registry editor.

Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters subkey.

From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value.

Enter the name DisableRogueDetection and press Enter.

Double-click the new value and set it to 1. Click OK.

Q. How can I hide the drop-down list of domains that appears on the logon screen of Windows XP and later machines?

A. To remove the domain drop-down list from the logon screen and force users to use their full user principal name (UPN), perform these steps:

Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon registry subkey.
From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value.
Enter a name of NoDomainUI and press Enter.
Double-click the new value and set it to 1. Click OK.
Reboot the machine.

The logon screen will no longer show a drop-down list for domains, and users will need to enter the full UPN to log on. For example, the user of an account called John in domain savilltech.com will enter the logon name [email protected].

Q. What's Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager for Windows XP?

A. Microsoft has released a utility called USB Flash Drive Manager for Windows XP, which you can use to manage USB flash devices. You can download the utility at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ThankYou.aspx?familyId=94991901-bfc4-485e-bcae-c9df0accdaae&displayLang=en. After you download the program, execute the .msi file to install the software. The USB Flash Drive Manager Setup Manager Wizard, which the figure shows, walks you through the rest of the installation. You can configure USB Flash Drive Manager to copy files to and from flash drives; create images of the flash drives for backup purposes (by default, the images are placed in your My Documents folder in a USB Flash Drive Backup subfolder); configure autorun capabilities on a flash drive; and enable wireless configuration settings to be stored on a flash drive.

Q. Are Group Policy Objects (GPOs) inherited by child domains?

A. You can apply GPOs at the site, domain, or organizational unit (OU) level; however, they're always stored in a specific domain. If a domain has child domains, the child domains and the objects therein don't inherit the parent's policies. Such inheritance would lead to cross-domain GPO linking, which isn't desirable. If you want to apply a policy to child domains, you need to either manually recreate the policy and apply it to the child domains or use Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) to export the policy, then import it into the new domain.
