Contact: Microsoft * 800-426-9400 Web: http://www.microsoft.com Price: $500 Summary Pros: Better security (much better on Windows Vista); tabbed browsing; antiphishing features; shrink-to-fit printing Cons: Still not as standards-compliant as the competition Rating: Standalone version: 3 out of 5 Windows Vista version: 4 out of 5 Recommendation: Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 7.0 is a huge improvement over the stagnating IE 6.x, which Microsoft has improved only in subtle ways since its 2001 release. The company has added excellent end-user features—such as tabbed browsing, better plug-in management, and shrink-to-fit printing (finally)—and much-needed security enhancements, such as integrated antiphishing functionality. But only Windows Vista users will see the biggest improvement—Protected Mode IE—in which IE runs in a reduced-privileges sandbox while in the Internet security zone.
