Recommendation:
Because of the sheer number of new features, it's never too early to start evaluating the next major Windows release. And now that we're finally starting to see stable and feature-packed beta releases, the waiting is over. Don't put this one off until 2006.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 7.0
Contact: Microsoft * 800-426-9400
Web: http://www.microsoft.com
Price: $500
Summary
Pros: Better security (much better on Windows Vista); tabbed browsing; antiphishing features; shrink-to-fit printing
Cons: Still not as standards-compliant as the competition
Rating: Standalone version: 3 out of 5
Windows Vista version: 4 out of 5
Recommendation:
Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 7.0 is a huge improvement over the stagnating IE 6.x, which Microsoft has improved only in subtle ways since its 2001 release. The company has added excellent end-user features—such as tabbed browsing, better plug-in management, and shrink-to-fit printing (finally)—and much-needed security enhancements, such as integrated antiphishing functionality. But only Windows Vista users will see the biggest improvement—Protected Mode IE—in which IE runs in a reduced-privileges sandbox while in the Internet security zone.
