Q. Should my Hyper-V servers be members of my domain or part of a workgroup?

A. There's not a right or wrong answer to this question, but there are several advantages to making the Hyper-V servers members of a domain.

  • You can use Failover Clustering (which requires the hosts to be domain joined).
  • You can use Kerberos authentication.
  • Management will be simplified, because you can use domain credentials.
  • Certain services require the Hyper-V host to be domain joined for virtual machine creation, such as in an automated virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environment.

Unless you have specific security limitations, such as having Hyper-V in a demilitarized zone (DMZ), most organizations will join their hosts into the domain.
