How to Type the Japanese Yen and Chinese Yuan (¥) Symbol

Here’s how to type the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan symbol (¥) in various platforms, such as Microsoft Word on a PC, Mac, and mobile devices.

There are multiple convenient ways to type the Japanese yen and Chinese yuan symbol or sign (¥) in a Microsoft Word document on a PC, on a Mac, and iOS or Android devices.

How to Insert the Yen/Yuan Symbol in Microsoft Word

When using Microsoft Word on a PC, go to the place in your document where you would like to insert the yen or yuan symbol. Next, hold the ALT key and type the numbers 0165.  

Another shortcut is to type 00A5 into your Word document, then press Alt + X to convert this code into the yen/yuan symbol.

If you plan on using the yen/yuan symbol multiple times in a Microsoft Word document, you can adjust your AutoCorrect options to automatically replace a word (such as “yen” or “yuan”) with ¥. 

How to Insert the Yen/Yuan Symbol on a Mac

The keyboard shortcut is the easiest way to type the yen/yuan symbol on a Mac. Hold Option, followed by the letter Y. This shortcut works in most applications, including Pages, Notes, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word.

You can also insert the yen/yuan symbol from your Mac’s Character Viewer. First, find Emoji & Symbols under the Edit menu. Search for “Yen” or “Yuan” or scroll to the section heading Currency Symbols.

The keyboard shortcut is the easiest way to type the yen/yuan symbol on a Mac.

Double-click the symbol to insert it. You can also drag the ¥ into your document.

How to Insert the Yen/Yuan Symbol on a Mobile Device

Typing the yen/yuan symbol is just as easy to do from the keyboard of an iOS or Android device. On an iPhone, tap the “123” button on your keypad. Next, hold down the dollar ($) symbol to see the option for the yen/yuan symbol appear. 

The yen and yuan symbols can be found in the numbers and symbols keyboard on Android devices. Hold down the dollar ($) symbol to reveal several currency options. Then click on ¥ to include this symbol in your document.
