Daily Update: Nokia is Burning, HP's webOS Press Conference Today, More

Good morning from Colorado.

Engadget has published a memo from former Microsoftie and current Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, in which he describes (accurately) Nokia's smart phone platform as a "burning platform." It's a great if sobering read. And it does support recent rumors that Nokia was considering adopting Windows Phone and/or Android.

We've lost market share, we've lost mind share and we've lost time.

How did we get to this point? Why did we fall behind when the world around us evolved?

This is what I have been trying to understand.

Nokia, our platform is burning.

Mark your calendars: February 11 is the day Nokia announces its new strategy. Should be interesting no matter what the decision is.

Speaking of which, HP will unveil its plans for a webOS tablet today at a press conference in San Francisco.

According to several reports, Apple's 2nd generation iPad is currently in production. New features seem to include dual cameras (modeled after those in the iPod touch, not the iPhone 4), a faster processor, a thinner and lighter body, more memory, and a more powerful GPU. Beyond this, it gets murky.

Dell announced a sweeping new lineup for its business oriented PCs yesterday. Among them was a new 10-inch slate-style Tablet PC running Windows 7. There's not much info on this device yet, but here's how the company describes it: "Dell plans to extend its existing tablet portfolio with a 10-inch, Windows 7-based business-ready tablet later this year. The upcoming tablet is designed for end-users who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability and integration with existing infrastructure investments. Dell’s tablet will empower a more mobile workforce in a way that offers customers the business applications and corporate data they need, while meeting regulatory mandates and IT requirements."

And speaking of Dell, the PC maker has apparently killed off its MacBook Air competitor, the oddly-named Adamo.

Irony alert: Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg is being stalked. On Facebook.

Adobe has released a new, 10.2, version of its Flash technology that offers less performance overhead and better battery life. I'm guessing it's too late to win over Apple, however.
