JSI Tip 5112. Mis-named print driver prevents downlevel clients from using Point and Print?

When you install downlevel print drivers on a Windows 2000 print server, all the print driver names must be the same for the clients to be able to use Point and Print.

To install downlevel print drivers on a Windows 2000 print server:

1. Install the Windows 2000 (version-3) driver for the printer.

2. Use Regedt32 to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers.

3. Find the printer that you just installed and note the print driver in the Printer Driver Value Name.

4. Open the .inf file for the downlevel print driver that you want to install.

5. Find all occurrences of the driver name and change them to to match the Printer Driver data value from step 3. If you can't figure out the driver name in the .inf file, use the Have Disk function of the Add Printer wizard to display the driver names in the .inf file.

6. On the Sharing tab for the printer, press Additional Drivers.

7. Check the boxes next to the platforms that you wish to add.

8. When prompted, select the modified .inf file from step 5.

NOTE: If you receive an error that says the driver could not be installed, search the .inf file for entries that reference the old driver name and change them to match the new driver name.

The registry entry for your printer is located at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\<print_queue_name> and the print driver is identified in the Printer Driver value name.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP clients retrieve information from the sub-keys of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3.

If an exact driver name match cannot be found, Windows 2000 clients will look in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2.

Windows NT 4.0 clients retrieve information from the sub-keys of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2.

Windows 9x and Windows ME clients retrieve information from the sub-keys of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows 4.0\Drivers\Version-0

Windows XP Itanium clients retrieve information from the sub-keys of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows IA64\Drivers\..
