JSI Tip 1730. Exchange error - Operation Terminated with Error -1032?

When you compact the database or make storage contiguous, you will receive the following message, if the appropriate service is not stopped:

Operation terminated with error -1032.

The Eseutil.exe utility (Edbutil.exe for version 4.0) requires that the appropriate service be stopped prior to execution. If you are running against the directory, stop the Exchange Directory service. If you are operating on the information store, stop the Exchange Information Store service.

If you still get the message, configure all exchange services as Manual and shutdown/restart the server. Once the utility successfully runs, reconfigure the services as Automatic.

If you receive the following, you may have a file permissions/attribute problem:
