Apple’s new AI software, Apple Intelligence, will bring generative AI to the iPhone, iPad and Mac with several new features including advanced language understanding and creation capabilities.

These new, systemwide Writing Tools in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia will help users communicate more effectively, allowing them to rewrite, proofread and summarize text in nearly any app, including Mail, Notes, Pages and third-party applications.

“Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia,” Apple says. “It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.”

OpenAI and Apple announced their partnership Monday, as the integration of ChatGPT will be seen in several new Apple Intelligence features.

The features were unveiled during Monday’s keynote at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference where Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with Apple’s products and what the products can do for their users in this new chapter in Apple innovation.

Here’s a look at some of those new features:

  • Priority Messages in mail will help users stay on top of email with a new section at the top of the inbox showing the most urgent emails. Additionally, summaries will be available instead of previews, along with Smart Reply suggestions offered for quick responses.

  • Priority Notifications appear at the top of the stack to surface what’s most important, along with summaries to show only key details on the lock screen.

  • Reduce Interruptions, a new Focus that only serves up notifications that may need immediate attention.

  • Image Playground offers new image creation capabilities letting users create images in seconds through animation, illustration and sketch. It’s built right into apps including Messages and also has a dedicated app to allow users to create images right on their device.

  • Genmoji takes emoji to an entirely new level, Apple says. Type a description and it appears with additional options allowing users to create Genmojis of friends and family from photos to be added to messages or shared as a sticker or reaction.

  • New Photo Features give users more control, letting them search for photos and videos using natural language. Search for a photo by saying something like “Mary riding her bike in a red shirt” and in videos users can now find a specific clip. Plus, a new Clean Up tool can detect and eliminate distracting background objects in a photo without inadvertently modifying the main subject.

  • Memories allow users to create a story by inputting a description. Apple Intelligence leverages language and image comprehension to select the most suitable photos and videos, organize them into thematic chapters and construct a cohesive movie with its own storytelling arc.

Apple says user photos and videos are kept private and not shared with Apple or anyone else as Apple Intelligence features offer a new standard for privacy in AI
