This step-by-step articles describes how to apply security patches by using Task Scheduler.
A member of the administrators group will have already identified and downloaded the security patches and created a script to run the patches that are referred to in this article.

Create a Security Patch .MSI Package
For this procedure, Windows Installer is used to convert the .exe patch file to an .msi file. You can install Windows Installer from your Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM, VALUEADD\3rd Party\MGMT\WINSTLE\Swiadmle.msi file.
- Click Start , point to Programs , point to VERITAS Software , and then click VERITAS Discover .
- Click Next , to continue.
- In the Specify the name of the application for which you are building the installation box, type the name of the patch or a general label, for example, Security Patches .
- In the Specify the Path and filename for the data file where the information on this installation will be kept box, type the path to where you want the new package to reside and the name for the new package. For example, c:\AdminPackages\Securitypatch.msi . Click Next to continue.
- Click the drive that will store the temporary work files for Windows Installer, and then click Next .
- Under Available Drives , click the drive where the file will be installed and affected, click Add , and then click Next .
- Accept the defaults, and then click Next .
- The program takes a snapshot of your computer, and depending on the size, it may take several minutes. When it is complete, click OK to continue.
- In the Look in box, locate the .exe file that is being converted, click the file, and then click Open .
- The .exe file runs its installation, and you must not restart your computer. Instead, click Reboot Later , and then run Windows Installer again.
- Click Start , point to Programs , point to VERITAS Software , and then click VERITAS Discover .
- Accept the default Perform the 'After' snapshot now setting, and then click Next .

Windows Installer takes the after snapshot, and creates the new .msi file in the location you specified.
NOTE : If there are difficulties with the conversion, the system will tell you so, and it may be necessary to go through this procedure again to convert the .nai file to an .msi file.
Set Up the Scheduled Task
- Click Start , point to Programs , point to Accessories , point to System Tools , and then click Scheduled Tasks .
- Double-click Add Scheduled Task , and then click Next .
- In the Scheduled Task Wizard, click Browse , locate the script that will run the .msi package that you created in the first task in the Look in box, click the script file, and then click Open .
- Under Perform this task , click the increment in which the script will be ran, and then click Next .
- Select the time, day, and start date for the script to be ran, and then click Next .
- In the Enter the user name box, type the administrator logon name ( domain name \Administrator, type the password, confirm the password, and then click Next .
- Click to select the Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish check box, and then click Finish .
- To change the run as option, on the Task tab, in the Run as box, type the new administrator logon name, click Set password , type the password, confirm the password, and then click OK .
- Any modification to the time and date the task is scheduled to run on the Schedule tab.
- You can modify task settings on the Settings tab, and to add users and modify permissions, click the Security tab.
