JSI Tip 5301. Your Windows XP keyboard and Mouse DO NOT work when you start your computer?

When you start Windows XP, your keyboard and mouse DO NOT work, even in Safe mode?

If you recently installed mouse or keyboard drivers, or any software that interacts with these drivers, your registry's System hive is likely to be corrupt.

To fix this problem:

01. Boot the Recovery Console, either from the menu, if you installed it from the CD-ROM with \i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons, or by booting the CD-ROM and pressing R on the Welcome to Setup screen.

02. Type the number that corresponds to your damaged installation and press Enter.

03. When prompted, enter the local Administrator password, which may be null, and press Enter.

04. Type cd system32 and press Enter.

05. Type cd config and press Enter.

06. Type del System and press Enter.

07. type copy c:\windows\repair\system and press Enter, where C: is the drive letter on which Windows XP is installed and windows is the folder it is installed in. You should receive:

1 file(s) copied.

08. Type exit and press Enter to restart Windows.

NOTE: If you had performed a recent System State backup, the System hive that you copied in step 7 is reasonably current and you may exit this procedure. If you have never performed a System State backup, you have copied the original System hive. Proceed with the following steps to copy a more recent System hive.

09. Log on with administrative privileges.

10. Open a CMD prompt and type:

copy "C:\System Volume Information\_restore\{91F76BFB-9F7E-44C5-BE7B-20CEBA4ACD4C\}\RPn\snapshot\_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM" c:\windows\temp\system
where RPn is the most recent Restore Point prior to the install that caused this problem.

11. Shutdown and boot the Recovery Console, and press R on the Welcome to Setup screen.

12. Type the number that corresponds to your damaged installation and press Enter.

13. When prompted, enter the local Administrator password, which may be null, and press Enter.

14. Type cd system32 and press Enter.

15. Type cd config and press Enter.

16. Type del System and press Enter.

17. Type copy c:\windows\temp\system and press Enter. You should receive:

1 file(s) copied.

18. Type exit and press Enter to restart Windows.
