JSI Tip 3015. How do I determine the keystrokes for special characters?

Both Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 come with the Character Map utility, in the Accessories / System Tools or Accessories folder of the Start menu.

While there are differences in how this utility functions between the two operating systems, they are similar.

In Windows 2000, check the Advanced view box.

Click the symbol or character that you wish to use and record the Keystroke in the bottom right.

Notice the the Keystroke for the copyright symbol, © is ALT+0169, which is entered by holding the ALT key and typing 0169 on the numeric keypad.

You can also press the Copy button to copy the symbol to the clipboard and then paste it into a document.

NOTE: If you look at the bottom left, you can see that this is a Unicode character with code X'00A9'.
