How can I configure the RAS Autodisconnect?

A. RAS Autodisconnect might already be configured. However, the following factors might prevent the program from disconnecting after the assigned time.

1. A WinSock client is currently connected to the Internet.
2. A Web Proxy client (a web browser) that has a refresh tag is open and connected to the Internet.
3. If active caching is configured on the proxy server, it might be performing page fetches.
4. Other TCP/IP traffic from the Internet (e.g., router messages from the ISP Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) messages) might be gathering network information.

To change the idle timeout, complete the following steps:

1. Select My Computer, Dial-Up Networking, then open the Dial-Up Networking dialog box.
2. Select User Preferences from the More menu.
3. Clear the check box next to New Location to disable the autodial by location.
4. Set the value in the Idle seconds before hanging up box. Click OK.
5. Choose Logon Preferences from the More menu.
6. Set the Idle seconds before hanging up value to be the same as the value in User Preferences. Click OK.
7. Disable the Remote Access AutoDial Manager (see Q. How can I configure Microsoft Proxy Server to automatically dial out to the ISP when needed?).
8. You can open the rasphone.pbk (in %systemroot%/system32/ras) and edit it.
10. Find IdleDisconnectSeconds in the section relating to each connection you use, and set to the number of seconds to disconnect (use the same value as that in Logon Preferences).
11. If OverridePref is present, set the value to 4. If OverridePref doesn’t exist, don’t create it.
12. Save the file.
