January 22, 2006
A. Microsoft has released SyncToy 1.0, which allows synchronization between folders. You can download the application at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649-CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en . After you install SyncToy, execute it via the SyncToy shortcut on the Start menu. You specify pairs of folders by clicking the Create New Folder Pair button, which will prompt you to select the left and right folder, as the figure shows. Click the left and right computer pictures to change the focus for the Browse button.
After you select the folders click Next, then choose the method of synchronization, as the figure shows. Here's a list of the synchronization options:
Synchronize. New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are replicated to the other.
Echo. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are replicated to the right.
Subscribe. Updated files on the right are copied to the left if the file already exists on the left.
Contribute. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are replicated to the right, but deletions aren't replicated.
Combine. New and updated files are copied both ways. No actions are taken for renamed or deleted files.
You'll be prompted to enter a name for the folder. Click Finish. After you configure the folders, you can preview the actions that will be performed by clicking the Preview All button (if viewing the "All Folder Pairs"), or click Run All to perform the configured sync tasks, as the figure shows.
