Sync Your SharePoint Sites with new OneDrive for Business Sync Client Preview
Last week at Ignite in Atlanta Microsoft unveiled their road map for OneDrive for Business and their plans to incorporate the ability to sync SharePoint sites using an updated sync client. That updated preview is now available for download and testing directly from Microsoft.
Last week at Microsoft Ignite in Atlanta I sat in on a OneDrive for Business session called Explore OneDrive for Business key features and roadmap that was presented by Omar Shahine and Reuben Krippner both Program Managers for Microsoft.
During the course of this session we learned that Microsoft would be delivering a new preview of the OneDrive for Business sync client that would finally introduce the capability to sync SharePoint sites to your local device.
In a blog post on the Office 365 website, Microsoft detailed all of the new capabilities that would be in the new sync client including teh SharePoint capabilities.
Here is a quick rundown of the new features expected in the updated client preview:
New sync capabilities include:
Ability to sync SharePoint Online document libraries and OneDrive folders shared with you (preview available today).
An “activity center” has been added to the OneDrive sync client to allow you to view synchronization and file activity at a glance (preview available today).
New browser capabilities include:
Rich thumbnails and previews for over 20 new file types (rolling out before the end of 2016).
Ability to access and edit all your files in OneDrive and SharePoint Online from the OneDrive browser client (rolling out before the end of 2016).
Capability to download multiple files as a .zip file (rolling out before the end of 2016).
New mobile capabilities include:
Notifications to your iOS or Android device when someone shares a OneDrive file with you (available today).
Access to SharePoint Online files in the OneDrive app on Android (available today).
Multi-page scan enhancements in the OneDrive app on Android (available today).
Ability to see over time how many people have discovered and viewed your files in OneDrive for iOS (available today).
New IT capabilities include:
Enhancements to integration with Office 2016 (available in First Release).
Simple, flexible OneDrive user management in Office 365 (available in First Release).
Dedicated OneDrive administration console in Office 365 (rolling out before the end of 2016).
Well you can now dive into some of these new features by downloading the OneDrive For Business sync preview that is now available.
This new preview build will let you perform the following actions according to Microsoft:
Navigate into a folder or subfolder and click Sync. No need to sync the entire document library.
Change the folders that you're syncing directly in the sync client.
Realtime coauthoring is supported with Office 2016 (C2R build 16.0.7167.2xxx or MSI build 16.0.4432.100x).
There is a series of steps necessary to begin using this new capability which involves disconnecting from Groove for any SharePoint sites and Shared folders.
Full details on how to do this plus get the new client installed and running are here.
