After you install the SMS Client on your Windows NT 4.0 Server, you receive the subject BSOD. This also happens when you try to restart in VGA mode.

To correct this problem:

01. Install an alternate copy of Windows NT.

02. Boot the Alternate install and set the default boot to your primary Windows NT installation, using Control Panel / System / Startup.

03. Copy System32vga.dll System32*.*

04. Use Regedt32.exe to select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive.

05. On the Registry menu, click Load Hive, per tip 0182.

06. Browse to System32ConfigSystem and press Open.

07. Type JSIINC into Key name and press OK.

08. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEJSIINCControlSetServicesVgaSave, where is the data value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEJSIINCSYSTEMSELECTCurrent, per tip 0187.

09. Double-click ImagePath in the right hand pane and make sure it is SystemRootSystem32DriversVga.sys.

10. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEJSIINCControlSetServicesVgaSaveDevice0 and double-click on InstalledDisplayDrivers in the right hand pane. Change it to VGA and press OK.

11. Select the JSIINC key and collapse it.

12. With JSIINC highlighted, Unload Hive from the Registry menu.

13. Press Yes to confirm.

14. Restart your computer in VGA mode of the primary install.

15. Resinstall your video adapter driver.

NOTE: If you wish to remove the alternate install, delete it's folder. Type Attrib -r -s -h c:boot.ini. Then edit c:boot.ini and remove the 2 entries for the alternate install.
