Getting Music Controls to Work on Your Garmin Fitness Device
Getting music controls to work for your Garmin fitness wearable is not straight forward. But, once enabled works like a charm.

Microsoft Band 2 owners know that Microsoft added the ability to control smartphone music over Bluetooth in last 2015. And, this feature works great as long as you’re not using a Windows 10 Mobile Insider build. In fact, and sadly, this feature actually works best on an Android smartphone or an iPhone. I also recently shared a solid method for getting it to work more consistently: Solid Workaround to Get Music Controls to Work Consistently on the Microsoft Band.
However, since I’ve been working with the Garmin Vivoactive HR a lot lately, I’ll be sharing some tidbits of things I’ve found – particularly those areas where documentation is difficult to find. Don’t worry, folks. Microsoft Band 2 is still my favorite.
If you’re a Garmin wearable owner, here’s how to get Music Controls to work with your device:
First off, you need to select the default music app on your smartphone. To do this, in the Garmin Connect app, open Settings.
Open Default Music Player.
Select the app that you want to provide the default music experience. In this case, I chose Microsoft Groove, since the latest update has made it a pretty significant option for Android.
Now on your device (shown is the Vivoactive HR), make sure you have the Music Control widget installed. If not install it from Settings – Widgets.
Locate the Music Control widget and you’re good to go.
Important: Make sure that the Garmin Connect app is running in the background on your smartphone and that your default music app is running in the foreground.
Music controls currently work with the following Garmin devices:
fēnix 3
fēnix 3HR
Tactix Bravo
D2 Bravo
Quatix 3
vívoactive
vívoactive HR
vívosmart
vívosmart HR
vívosmart HR+
Forerunner 230/ 235
Forerunner 630
Forerunner 735XT
