Network Testing Labs, one of the world's leading independent research companies, put together a comprehensive Comparison Paper on two leading enterprise monitoring solutions. Their conclusion: "The Argent Guardian easily beats out MOM in all our tests ... The Argent Guardian will cost far less than MOM and yet provide significantly more functionality." Find out for yourself why organizations like Major League Baseball, GE Capital, AT&T, Harley Davidson, and Nokia all rely on The Argent Guardian for their enterprise monitoring and alerting needs. by Paul Thurrott, [email protected] PDC 2003 Opens Despite Area Fires
When Windows & .NET Magazine news reporter Keith Furman and I arrived in Los Angeles on Saturday for Microsoft Professional Developer Conference (PDC) 2003, smoke from the Los Angeles-area fires was so thick that our plane had to make several landing attempts. We were fortunate. We learned yesterday that because of the forced closure of a major radar control facility, hundreds of flights into the Los Angeles area have been canceled and some 50 Microsoft employees are stranded in Seattle.
The conference officially opened this morning with Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates's keynote address. But yesterday's preconference sessions provided a big-picture view of the Microsoft world that we don't typically see. We spent most of the morning listening to interesting presentations about Microsoft's various PDC-related platforms (e.g., Windows, Visual Studio .NET, Web services) and how they tie together. If we could boil down the message to an easily digested tag line, it would have to be "integration innovation," which sounds strange but is accurate.
Although PDC 2003 promises to be exciting, we have to say that Longhorn build 4051--which PDC 2003 attendees will receive--isn't. After you get past the mildly amusing Slate theme and the slow and painful hardware detection, this build is basically the same as earlier alpha builds, albeit in a more usable form. Windows Explorer features the Aero-like look that I first revealed on the SuperSite for Windows, and that's about it. We've installed the build on three machines so far, and I don't have much more to say, at least not yet. The build has leaked to the Internet, so if you weren't able to attend the conference, don't worry. You should be able to find it easily.
Despite our lack of enthusiasm for the Longhorn build, other aspects of the conference are impressive. The Los Angeles Convention Center is huge, and the conference sports an Xbox game room, wired and wireless Internet connections, kiosks for attendees who didn't bring PCs, a set of MSN alerts just for PDC 2003 attendees, and PDC Vibe--a community application that lets attendees read blogs, create their own profiles, and download files.
