SPONSOR: ARE YOU CONFIDENT YOUR OPEN FILES ARE BACKED UP?

In today's 24x7 environments, an organization's critical files such as email and databases require around the clock availability, putting them at risk of being skipped or corrupted during backups. Open File Manager enhances existing backup solutions by capturing open files, even if they are changing during the backup. Run backups anytime without interrupting users, or closing applications. Open File Manager adds a protective layer to your company's data protection strategy by ensuring critical data is backed up completely and uncorrupted in a seamless and transparent manner. SC Info Security Magazine rated it 5 out of 5 stars in all categories and overall.

1. NEWS AND VIEWS
(contributed by Paul Thurrott, [email protected])

  • MICROSOFT IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST COMPANY

This week, Microsoft surpassed General Electric (GE) to become the world's largest company, as measured by market value. Microsoft's move into the number-one spot is the result of a small stock-price increase that gave the company a market capitalization of more than $299 billion. In contrast, GE has a market capitalization of a little more than $295 billion.

Microsoft has held the number-one spot once before, when it pushed past GE for most of 1999. But GE had been ranked number one since April 2000, after a brief stint behind Cisco Systems. The sliding economy has hit Cisco, GE, and Microsoft hard. Despite being among the largest companies in the world, both Microsoft and GE have market capitalizations that are less than half their peak values.

In a bid to keep investors happy, Microsoft will unleash a torrent of new products this fall. Chief among these products are Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows .NET Server, Mira, Freestyle, and the Tablet PC. The company will then jump aboard the beta treadmill once again with field tests of new product releases, including Office 11—due in 2003—and the next version of Windows (code-named Longhorn), which probably won't ship until 2004. The company has said that both Office 11 and Longhorn will begin testing before the end of 2002.
