On April 23, SANS will present a free Web cast called, "Legal Liability for Information Security: Ask the Experts." A spokesperson for SANS said, "For years, security professionals have claimed that one day people will be held liable for weak security. That day may have arrived, with class action lawsuits, and HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act], and California's new disclosure law and more."
A panel of security professionals will present their point of view and answer questions from the audience. Panel members for the legality aspects of the broadcast include:
Marc J. Zwillinger, Chair of the Information Security & Anti-Piracy Practice Group at Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal
Gregory P. Schaffer, Director of Cybercrime Prevention & Response for PricewaterhouseCoopers
Orin Kerr, Professor of Law at George Washington University
Two other panelists will also take part. Hal Pomeranz of the Center for Internet Security will provide information about configuration standards that various businesses and government agencies have adopted. Charles Woods of InfoSecurity Infrastructure will help clarify responsibility for information security.
The Web cast is slated for 1 P.M. Eastern time. Those who wish to participate can sign up at SANS Web site.
