Securing SharePoint from Within and from Without
A SharePoint security solution with antivirus as well as data loss prevention features.
May 6, 2010
Trend Micro released PortalProtect 2.0, a security solution for SharePoint. Its new features include the antivirus protection you'd expect, plus advanced content filtering to prevent data loss. It takes half the administrative time to manage compared to its nearest competitor, Microsoft Forefront, says Trend Micro’s Chris Taylor, global marketing product manager.
And Forefront doesn’t have the web threat protection that PortalProtect does, he says. “With SharePoint 2010, users can share a link to a site that might have been compromised. 92 percent of threats enter in from the web.” To mitigate that risk, PortalProtect takes advantage of the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network infrastructure that scans, filters, and correlates billions of emails, websites, and files daily, and uses that data to identify and respond to emerging threats.
PortalProtect also adds advanced content filtering to ensure what is posted to a SharePoint site is in compliance with company and regulatory policies. “Over 60 percent of U.S. companies are using SharePoint either to build portals, team sites, share files, discussion forums, wikis and blogs – and they’re sharing that information both internally and externally with their partners and customers,” said David Lieberman, director of messaging business for Trend Micro. “But when external users are involved, the risk of infection and data theft increases significantly, as does the possibility of data loss.”
PortalProtect’s content filtering can detect and block unwanted web content posted to SharePoint environments and includes pre-built data loss prevention templates that track personal identifiable information such as social security or account numbers that can creep into SharePoint sites either intentionally or accidentally. PortalProtect is licensed on a per-user basis for internal users, at $18 per user for 500-1,000 users, and on a per server basis for external users. To learn more, see Trend Micro’s website.
