This Week in "Windows 8.1 Book": February 9, 2014

Now at over 475 pages

Another big week for "Windows 8.1 Book": We passed the 475 page mark, posted the 50th update to the full book document since September, completed two more chapters, and will be adding a Devices chapter on the way to the 1.0 milestone.

Remember, we're charging just $2 for the book, and you can contribute in other ways as well. Check out my earlier post Buy Windows 8.1 Book! or the Windows 8.1 Book web site for the details.

This week's updates (with the newest posts at the top) include:

First draft of Users and Security chapter is complete

Here is the first draft version of the USERS AND SECURITY chapter for "Windows 8.1 Book." This is a fairly high-level and short look at these topics. I could see adding to this chapter over time. But ... moving towards 1.0.

We need a DEVICES chapter

As much as I'd like to race to the finish line by finishing the remaining couple of chapters and signing off on a 1.0 release of the book, it occurs to me that we're missing something: A chapter about devices. Things like mice, keyboards, USB storage, webcams, printers, scanners, external displays (including Miracast) and so on. Nothing dramatic, but this stuff often works differently in Windows 8.1.

Users and Security 0.2 and Book 0.50

Here is the 50th update to the prelease version of "Windows 8.1 Book," a minor update to the USERS AND SECURITY chapter.

Users and Security 0.1 and Book 0.49

Here is a very early (and rough) look at the USERS AND SECURITY chapter for "Windows 8.1 Book." This chapter will cover the new and unfamiliar user and security features in Windows 8.1. As with other 0.1 chapter updates, I expect the content and structure of this chapter to change as more content is added.

About book downloads and typos

First, if you paid for the book, it's yours forever and you can download any and all updates at any time. That is, you didn't buy some version of the book. You bought the book. And especially now when it's incomplete, but going forward too, the plan is to update it regularly. I think we've proven that we can do this—there have been almost 50 updates to the main book document since September, for example—but the important bit here is that you didn't buy a version. You bought the book. So keep getting newer versions are they come out.

First draft of Backup and Restore chapter is complete

Here is the first draft version of the BACKUP AND RESTORE chapter for "Windows 8.1 Book." There are three chapters left before we hit the 1.0 milestone, but they're all short chapters.
