JSI Tip 7737. When you mount a volume in Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise Edition or Datacenter Edition), the volume label is blank?

When you dismount and re-mount a volume, you observe all of the following behaviors:

  • The volume label is blank in Windows Explorer.

  • The file system is RAW when you view the volume's Properties.

  • Diskpart.exe displays the information correctly.

. NOTE: If you restart your server, the problem is resolved.

This behavior occurs because the automatic mounting of new volumes feature is off by default on the subject platforms, causing the GUI (only) to malfunction.

NOTE: DO NOT enable the automatic mounting of new volumes on the Enterprise or Data Center platforms.

NOTE: To enable the automatic mounting of new volumes, open a CMD prompt and type mountvol /E.
