JSI Tip 10312. A program on Windows Server 2003 SP1 can no longer access the registry on a remote computer?

After installing Service Pack 1, a programs on Window Server 2003 can no longer access the registry on a remote computer if you are not logged on with elevated security.

To workaround this behavior, use Run As, or CPAU, or use the Windows Credential Manager feature to cache the appropriate credentials on the local computer and to associate those credentials with the remote computer:

1. Log on to the remote computer with the appropriate credentials, such as administrator.

2. Open the Credential Manager.

3. Use Manage Passwords on the Advanced tab to add the credential. Some operating systems let you also set this credential as the default.

NOTE: See:

Windows XP introduces a new behavior which makes it easier to access resources that require credentials other than the logged-on user's credentials.

Cached credentials security in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows 2000.
