WinInfo Short Takes: Week of December 27

SORRY FOR THE short notice, but I'm going to be taking next week off to get some stuff done around the house (which is still only partially moved into) and spend some time with Steph and Mark, both of whom will be home all week as well. I'll try to check my mail now and again, but I won't be spending a lot of time online until after the New Year. Anyway, I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday and New Years! --Paul

YOU CAN'T EVEN buy a small hard these days. For me, several small drives are preferable to one humongous one. I'd rather have three 6 GB drives than one 18 GB monster, for example. But you can't even buy such a thing: A random sampling of CompUSA, Best Buy, and Costco reveals that the smallest size drive you can find these days is 10 GB (13 GB at two of the stores). And this costs about $129 at CompUSA (though Costco had a 7200 RPM 13 GB drive for the same price). How about small drives for half that price? I'd love to see $50 hard drives. Wouldn't you?

THIS ONE IS cute: In a very special Microsoft knowledge base article, the company tells customers how to remove Linux so that they can install Windows 2000 or Windows NT instead. If there was ever a sign that Linux has come of age, this is it.

MICROSOFT MUST BE doing something right: The company is worth over $600 billion dollars now, thanks to the finalization of Windows 2000, which pushed the company's stock to record levels. They should continuously delay products more often. Or something.

MOZILLA HAS RELEASED a new milestone in its drive to create an open source version of Netscape Communicator 5.0. The M12 release, as its known, is apparently the first fully functional pre-beta they've completed and while it's got some rough spots, you can finally see where they're going with it. Check it out!

REMIND ME TO never go out on Christmas eve again! My wife and I took Mark out to CompUSA and Baby's R Us this morning, not to shop for Christmas shopping, but to pick up a few things before the crush set in. Big mistake: We made it in OK but the crowds has swelled so much that it literally took us over 40 minutes to get our car from its parking spot to the street. Joy to the world indeed. :
