Microsoft Kicks Off CES with Call for Connected Experiences

by Paul Thurrott, [email protected]

Sunday night, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates unveiled a new generation of "connected experiences" that involve the company's consumer-oriented platforms, such as Windows Vista, the Xbox 360, and the new Windows Home Server. The announcements, which came during Gates' keynote address at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), all revolve around community and sharing.

"As the magic of software makes it easier for people to be creators, publishers, and consumers of digital content, it is expanding the way we think about community and entertainment," Gates said. "From your living room to your car, we’re delivering a wave of new software products and services that make it easier for you to manage your day-to-day lives, express your ideas, and share your interests."

Among these new products and services are a wave of new PC hardware inspired by the Aero UI in Vista, new Vista games and gaming capabilities, a new version of the Xbox 360 console that includes support for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), and the eagerly awaited Windows Home Server, which combines innovative storage features with remote access. Gates also touted the Sync initiative, which will put Windows Automotive-based hands-free capabilities in Ford vehicles over the next few years, and a new generation of Vista-based Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs).

As you might expect, complete coverage of the Gates keynote and Windows Home Server is now available on the SuperSite for Windows.
