Windows NT Server and IIS gain momentum

Sales of Windows NT Server more than doubled in the first half of 1997 when compared to the previous year, Microsoft announced today. With the introduction of the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, which is basically a free NT 4.1-type upgrade, sales are expected to grow even faster this Spring.

"There has been a tremendous growth in the number of resellers purchasing licenses from us in the last year," said Tracy Robbins, vice president of software at Merisel, a distributor of computer hardware and software products. "With the re-fresh of Windows NT Server and the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, we expect even stronger sales of Windows NT Server 4.0 moving forward."

There are now more than 360,000 Web sites running Windows NT Server and IIS, according to Netcraft. That's more than double the amount using Netscape Web server software.

IIS 4.0, released a few weeks ago as part of the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, is already used on more than 6,000 Web sites. Sites using IIS 4.0 include ABCNEWS.com, Comcast QVC, ESPN SportsZone and the official sites for the NASCAR, NBA, NFL and WNBA.
