Sun submits Java application to standards body

Sun announced today that it is submitting Java to an international standards body in an attempt to spread the technology to as many overseas corporations as possible. Sun is attempting to diffuse criticism that Java is a proprietary language.

The standards body is made up of representatives from the International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Suns application will be reviewed and a decision will be made by July. If the application is accepted, Sun will begin handing Java over to the group in pieces, with the more mature portions of the technology going first. Java-related technologies include Sun's JavaBeans component specification, the JavaOS operating system, and the HotJava Web browser
