Sun may take on ActiveX with JavaBeans/OpenDoc merger

Sun is considering merging their Java component technology--JavaBeans--with OpenDoc, an excellent but widely ignored object model from IBM. The combined products would be positioned against Microsoft's popular ActiveX and Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM). IBM initiated the idea, asking Sun to make OpenDoc the default object container for JavaBeans. Of course, tying JavaBeans too closely to a technology like OpenDoc could be a mistake, as OpenDoc has the smell of death about it. ActiveX developers, for example, constitute the largest group of component makers and are not interested in OpenDoc
