Apple Computer announced today that Steve Jobs has been named interim CEO by its board of directors. It is expected to name a permanent CEO by the end of the year. Don't read too much into this announcement, however: the board has a legal responsibility to its shareholders to appoint an interim CEO while they search for a new leader.
"The fact that he's been named interim CEO is an indication of the role Steve has been playing at the company," Apple spokeswoman Katie Cotton said. "The search is going well."
