Site Server 3.0 to go beta next week

Microsoft announced today that Site Server 3.0, the next version of its intranet publishing server suite, will go into beta next week. Site Server 3.0 will ship in two editions, Standard and Commerce, when it becomes available next quarter. Both editions will require Windows NT Server 4.0 and Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0.

The Commerce Edition of Site Server, which is a superset of the Standard Edition, adds failsafe capabilities to Web transactions so that when transactions are cancelled part way through, the information can be automatically returned to its pre-transaction condition. It will also include an Advertisement Server, according to group product manager Pat Fox, that will host online advertisements.

Microsoft Front Page 98 and Visual InterDev 1.0 will be bundled with Site Server 3.0, which itself will become part of BackOffice 4.0. Pricing has not been determined yet
