Office 97 Service Release now beta testing

Microsoft began testing its Office 97 Service Release 1 this week, with an anticipated final release of July 17. SR1 features the new Word 97-to-95 converter and numerous enhancements to Outlook. Most of the fixes are currently available as separate downloads from the Microsoft Web site. A new Snapshot feature for Access 97 lets users take a snapshot of a report and distribute it, rather than distributing the entire database. This requires a separate Snapshot Viewer program, which is also included in the service release. The new version of OfficeArt supports Pentium and Pentium II MMX functionality.

A separate Enterprise Update is also testing that updates Outlook for better Exchange 5.0 support, including Web-based checking of email
