Microsoft unveils Office identifier removal tool

Microsoft Corporation is now offering two tools that will remove the Unique Identifier from Office 97 documents and remove that feature from Office altogether. This issue came up last week as privacy groups said that Microsoft was able to discover the originator of documents over the Internet using the identifier. While there are valid reasons to want your documents to be marked this way, Microsoft has caved into privacy pressures and released tools that will remove the feature from Office 97 completely and remove the Ids from existing documents. You can find these tools on the Office Update Web site.

Not coincidentally, Microsoft has decided to remove this feature from Office 2000, due this quarter
