Microsoft releases Exchange Server 5.0

As expected, Microsoft today released Exchange Server 5.0 and it's new client, Outlook. The announcement came at the Spring Internet World show in Los Angeles. Among the new features of Exchange 5.0 is tighter integration with Visual InterDev and Front Page 97, and native support for the SMTP/POP3, NNTP, and LDAP protocols.

The price of Exchange 5.0 is somewhat lower than the previous version: the Enterprise Edition dropped from US$4,000 to US$3,549. The Standard Edition is priced the same at US$999.

Microsoft will release the next major version of Exchange late this year. It will support improved scalability the IMAP4 protocol
