Microsoft pushes pack ACPI spec compliance

Microsoft is giving PC vendors another six months--that is, until January 1998--to implement their Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) specification. ACPI is the key component behind the OnNow technology, which will make PCs more like radios and TVs: when you turn the machine on, it will "boot" instantly and automatically return you to the programs you were using when you powered down.

Some vendors complained that implementing the feature this year would be cost-prohibitive and Microsoft still had some work to do with completing and testing it
