Memphis beta due this quarter

According to Phil Holden, a product manager in the business systems division at Microsoft, the company will release a beta version of Memphis, the next version of Windows 95, sometime this quarter. The remarks came during a speech at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas yesterday. Memphis, according to Holden, will include several exciting new technologies including an integrated Internet Explorer 4.0 with Active Desktop, and a TV tuner that will provide the necessary software to decode data and full-motion video in future digital broadcasts. Memphis will also support at least two monitors simultaneously. This feature is expected to be popular with users who use Memphis for TV/video integration and Web developers/desktop publishers.

Memphis will include support for the FireWire serial port, the USB serial port, and DVD devices. It will also support universal remote controls so that users can control the operating system in their dens
