JSI Tip 5823. How do I change the Recovery Console and Directory Service Restore Mode Administrator password on a domain controller?

To reset the Recovery Console Administrator password, or the Directory Service Restore Mode Administrator password, you must have Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or greater.

To reset the password:

1. Open a CMD prompt on a domain controller.

2. Type CD /d "%systemRoot%\System32" and press Enter.

3. Type setpwd \[/s:<ServerName>\], where \[/s:<ServerName>\] is optional and used to perform the operation on a remote domain controller.

4. At the Please type the password for DS Restore Mode Administrator Account: prompt, type the new password and press Enter.
