JavaSoft speeds up Java with acquisition

JavaSoft announced yesterday the acquisition of LongView Technologies LLC, a company that has created a new Java Virtual Machine (JVM) called HotSpot. According to reports, the HotSpot JVM is twice as fast as Microsoft’s JVM, the previous performance leader. HotSpot improves the speed of Java applets through various low-level optimizations.

If you’re interested in details about HotSpot, however, you’ll have to wait until April, when Sun officials will unveil the new technology at the Java One conference in San Francisco.

In a related development, JavaSoft released the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 1.1 this week. There is also an “early access version” of the Java Beans-to-ActiveX bridge that allows Java Beans components run in ActiveX applications and controls.
