A. Although you might see an error message on screen when you attempt to map a network drive by using Windows Explorer's Map Network Drive icon, the OS does map the drive. If you right-click Network Neighborhood and select Map Network Drive, you don't get an error message and the mapping is successful.
To eliminate this misleading error message, you need to expand registry permissions by performing the following steps:
- Start the regedt32 registry editor (because you're modifying permissions, you must use regedt32.exe).
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Network\World Full Access Shared Parameters.
- Click Security, then click Permissions. Make sure either the Everyone group or the Authenticated Users group has at least Change permission to this registry subkey and values.
- Close the registry editor.
