Thanks to Dave Auger and Sean Rima for the tip: Microsoft has released the first hot-fix for Windows NT 4.0 SP4, which prevents a denial of service attack in applications used Named Pipes over RPC. If your Windows NT computer's responsiveness appears sluggish, or network clients report a gradual decrease in system performance because of a Windows NT system process consuming 100 percent of CPU time, this is the hot-fix for you. For more details, check out the new post-SP4 section of Microsoft's FTP site.
