AOL posts strong earnings, even with Netscape purchase

America Online (AOL) saw its user base grow to 16.9 million members worldwide as it posted quarterly income of $117 million on revenues of $1.3 billion. When income from the recently acquired Netscape Communications is factored in, the company reports net income of $420 million for the quarter.

AOL's membership grew by 1.8 million in the quarter, bumping subscriber-based revenues to $869 million. The company made $157 million from advertising and e-commerce and $567 million from the sale of Excite. Reorganization costs, due to the Netscape purchase, totaled $103 million
