Xbox One Launch: November 22, 2013

After PS4? Here we go again

Microsoft revealed today that the Xbox One would ship on Friday, November 22, 2013. That's one week after Sony's PlayStation 4 will launch, and over two weeks after the launch of the console's most widely anticipated launch window game title, Call of Duty: Ghosts. When you consider the ongoing controversies around this console, this date is somewhat surprising.

November 22 is the same date that Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, back in 2005. But sources had told me months ago that Microsoft was targeting an "early November" launch for the Xbox One. So I figured the launch date would be November 5, 2013. Nope.

"Xbox One will be available on November 22, 2013 in all 13 of our initial launch markets – Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, UK, and USA.  Many more markets will follow in 2014," Microsoft revealed in a post to the Xbox Wire blog. Of course, the firm originally intended to launch Xbox One in 21 markets, but delayed the launch in 8 of those markets last month.

While Microsoft has supposedly sold out of "Day One" Xbox One pre-orders, the firm today announced that it was making more Day One consoles available to retailers. Check out the Xbox One pre-order site if you're interested but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Microsoft also recently revealed that the Xbox One had reached "full production." I wrote about that milestone in the news story, Xbox One Heads Into Production
