The .com domain might be getting some new associates soon. Ten organizations recently submitted top-level domain (TLD) applications to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that manages and coordinates the DNS. The list of requested TLDs includes .mobi and .xxx. A group that includes HP, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Sun Microsystems, and Vodafone requested the .mobi TLD. Web sites that use the .mobi extension would be designed specifically for the small screens on mobile devices. The International Foundation for Online Responsibility (iFOR) requested the .xxx TLD, which would be used for adult-entertainment sites. The new extension would make it easier for filtering software to block children's access to adult sites. The list of requested TLDs also includes .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mail, .post, .tel, and .travel. A month-long public-comment period will begin March 31, and ICANN should formally accept or deny the applications by early summer
