Microsoft releases BackOffice 4.5 and trial edition

As predicted earlier in WinInfo, Microsoft Corporation on Wednesday announced the immediate availability of BackOffice 4.5, its latest integrated server suite for the Windows NT 4.0 platform. BackOffice 4.5 is now available for evaluation in the form of a $30 fully functional trial edition CD kit as well.

"Our customers are challenging us to simplify the deployment of solutions based on Office and BackOffice," said Rich Tong, vice president of marketing for the Business Productivity Group at Microsoft. "BackOffice Server 4.5 makes the jobs of IT professionals and solution developers easier by taking the guesswork out of setting up and managing a branch or departmental server."

Also announced is a new Team Productivity Update, which helps administrators integrate components from Microsoft Office 2000, Internet Explorer 5.0, and BackOffice 4.5. But the biggest new features in BackOffice 4.5 are the inclusion of SQL Server 7.0 and the debut of a new Microsoft Management Console (MMC)-based central administration tool for all of the applications. Previous versions of BackOffice used separate admin tools for each component.
