JSI Tip 8329. 'Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile' when you log on to a wireless network from Windows XP?

The complete error message is:

Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. You may receive this error message because of network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

The Userenv.log file may contain error 53 or error 1231.

This behavior may occur if all of the following are true

  • Active Directory defines your user profile as roaming.
  • The Wireless network is configured with WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) only. NO other authentication method, such as PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) is configured.
  • After starting your computer, you log on as soon as the Welcome to Windows screen appears.

This behavior occurs because the wireless network adapter has NOT had enough time to initialize.

To workaround this problem, wait 30 seconds after the Welcome to Windows appears before logging on.
