when a user connects through Terminal Services running on any Windows 2000 Server edition, or Windows Server 2003 edition, programs that require a per-user directory may not work, and a per-user Windows folder may not be created in the user's home directory.
This behavior will occur if any of the following are true:
- A user does not have permission to create file system objects in their home directory.
- A user does not have permission to read the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install key, or any of it's sub-keys.
To resolve this problem, verify that the user has the appropriate permissions.
To determine a user's terminal server home directory:
1. If the user is a domain member, Start / Run / dsa.msc / OK. If the user is NOT a domain member, Start / Run / lusrmgr.msc / OK.
2. Select Users in the left-hand pane.
3. Right-click the user in the right-hand pane and press Properties.
4. Select the Terminal Services Profile tab, or the Profile tab.
5. Write down the contents of the Local path box.
To verify that the user has permission to read the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install key and sub-keys:
1. Use Regedt32.exe, or Regedit.exe for Windows Server 2003, to select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install key.
2. Right-click the key and press Permissions, or use the Security / Permissions menu.
3. Verify that the user has Read permission on this key and all sub-keys.
