When you attempt to logon to a domain controller from a Windows 2000 server that is running Terminal Services, you cannot contact the domain controller.
This issue will occur if you cannot contact the domain controller via a NetBIOS broadcast.
If WINS is installed, run nbtstat -RR on both the Terminal Server and the domain controller.
If you don't want to install WINS:
1. Open %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Etc\LMHOSTS in Notepad.exe.
NOTE: There is NO extension.
2. Add the following lines:
<IP Address of the PDC emulator> PDCName #PRE #DOM:<Domain Name> <IP Address of the PDC emulator> "<Domain Name>\0x1b" #PREwhere <IP Address of the PDC emulator> is the IP address of the domain controller that holds the PDC emulator role, PDCNAME is the NetBIOS name of the computer that holds the PDC emulator role, and <Domain Name> is the NetBIOS domain name. All entries must be upper case. The number of characters between the quote (") marks MUST be 20.
3. Save the file, making sure it does not get an extension.
4. Open a CMD.EXE window.
5. Type nbtstat -R and press Enter, where R must be upper case.
6. You should receive:
Successful purge and preload of the NBT Remote Cache Name Table.
