JSI Tip 7892. When a Windows XP client goes offline, you can still ping it by name and return an IP address?

When you use the ping (Packet InterNet Groper) command to ping a Windows XP client by name, the client name is resolved and an IP address is returned, even if the client computer is offline (shutdown or not connected).

This behavior will occur if the Windows XP client used VPN (Virtual Private Network) to register with a WINS server. When the VPN client disconnects, it does NOT mark the WINS record as released. This can result in multiple VPN clients registering in WINS with the same IP address, resulting in the subject, by design, behavior.
