JSI Tip 7618. Windows XP Setup remains in Boot.ini after you upgrade?

After you upgrade to Windows XP, in addition to the expected Windows XP entry on the boot menu, you have a Setup entry. If you select the normal entry, Windows XP starts. If you select the Setup entry, the computer restarts, or Setup starts.

To resolve this problem:

01. Open a CMD.exe prompt.

02. Type attrib -r -s -h c:\boot.ini and press Enter.

03. Type notepad c:\boot.ini and press Enter.

04. Remove any line under the \[operating systems\] section that contains the word Setup.

05. Press Save on the File menu.

06. Press Exit on the File menu.

07. Type attrib +r +s +h c:\boot.ini and press Enter.

08. Close the CMD.EXE window.

09. Right-click My Computer and press Properties.

10. Select the Advanced tab.

11. Under Startup and Recovery, press the Settings button.

12. Use the drop-down box to select the Default operating system.

13. Set the time to display list of operating systems to a number of your choice.

14. Press OK and OK.
