When you attempt to promote a Windows member server to a domain controller, you receive:
The domain Domain cannot be contacted. Ensure that the DNS domain name is typed correctly. This condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem. If this domain was recently created, its name may not yet be registered with the Domain Naming Service. The domain Domain is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active Directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.
This behavior can occur if an upgrade from a Windows NT 4.0 domain has set the NT4Emulator Value Name, a REG_DWORD data type, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netlogon/Parameters, to 1, on Windows domain controllers.
The workaround for this problem is painful:
1. Copy / Paste the following to a DelNT4Emulator.reg file:
REGEDIT4
\[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netlogon/Parameters\]
"NT4Emulator"=-
2. Run regedit /s DelNT4Emulator.reg on all your domain controllers.
3. Shutdown and restart all the domain controllers.
4. Rejoin all Windows 2000-based, Windows XP-based, and Windows Server 2003-based clients and member servers to the domain.
